Short Story Published!

I had a fictional short story published by Heart of Flesh Literary Journal this week! My story, entitled Through the Hedge, can be found here. If you’d like to browse the larger journal or purchase a print copy, you can do so here.

I’m staying “on brand” as this story features children, birds, and old houses. The initial spark for this story was thinking about an often-used phrase in my family and being curious about how other people might understand it.

Through the Hedge is a short story I wrote last year during the Habit Membership’s Short Story Summer Camp. I know I’ve mentioned it so many times before, but I have truly found this online writing community so helpful in my writing journey. It provides accountability, inspiration, support, connections, and fun! It is the only online community I have encountered that I would say truly merits the word “community”. Short Story Summer Camp will be happening again this year. It is typically 6 weeks, with short stories to read and discuss in online sessions, followed by writing exercises and peer feedback in forums, culminating with a story hour (even if everyone’s story isn’t perfectly polished yet).

Last summer was crazy for me and I was not able to participate as fully in the class as I normally would, but even so, the structure of the class allowed me the opportunity to eventually bring this story to fruition and I’m so glad it has now been published so a wider audience can enjoy!
