First Snow

Snow’s all right on a fine morning, but I like to be in bed while it’s falling- Samwise Gamgee

Today was my first real snow day (with accumulation) in two years. I was so excited that I didn’t follow Sam’s example and enjoy a couple extra hours in bed. This was also the first snow at my house and I wanted to open all the blinds, enjoy the view from every window, and put the tea on (while enjoying my snowflake shortbread cookies).

I love snow days (not an original thought, I know). I love that they not only provide a break from work, but usually an unexpected one. They are not like a holiday that you can count on having off and plan accordingly. They just sort of fall in your lap, like an unexpected gift when it isn’t your birthday. They can be a surprise up to the very last moment. I know if it has rained overnight because every drop makes its presence know on my metal roof. But snow falls softly and gently. I won’t know if it has really snowed until I get up and open the windows.

Yesterday was my grandfather’s funeral. There were many tears and he will be missed, but there was also much joy and peace, knowing he still lives. I was studying the story of Lazarus with my roommate the week before my grandfather passed and that passage has been so comforting. It is good to have a little more time to reflect and rest before returning to work.

I’m thankful for today’s beauty, from the snowcapped mountains to the frosty window panes to the white outlined trees.

  1. Thank you for the pictures and thoughts, Chelsea. It was snowing when I went to bed last night but not sticking even on the ground. I expected it to be gone when I got up this morning to a bright sun. What an unexpected surprise to look out and still have a beautiful snow. That made my day!
