Vintage Pyrex Find

Mrs. Miniver was a fool about inanimate objects.

-Jan Struther

I’ll start with a quick update. I have been quiet and safe at home for the last several months (though we did start back to school last week). If you are wondering why the silence when I had so much time to write, I was writing quite a bit, just not publishing. I have half a dozen drafts that I wrote as I was processing different events, but in the end decided to keep them as that, a way to process. I also worked some on my fiction writing, but those stories are not quite ready to share with the world either. I even ended up freelancing writing for the summer as a part time job to keep me busy, stretch my writing skills in a different way, and to help fund my renovations on the carriage house. Today though, I’m back to the blog.

Today was a rainy Saturday and I decided to treat myself to a downtown excursion to some antique stores I hadn’t been in for at least six months. I enjoy browsing in antique stores, but things tend to be out of my budget. I mostly shop thrift stores, yard sales, and curbside pickup (the old fashioned kind, as in picking up stuff off the curb).

One particular store was packed to the gills. They buy out estates so their intake level has remained steady while fewer customers have been in the store to buy. The result was an amusing (if very humid) treasure hunt. I found a few books and got a really good deal on a 1949 local yearbook. I also found this adorable embroidered memento that I’m going to hang in my room. Even their names are cute.

Way in the back, I found a set of vintage colored Pyrex with no price on it. It was rather grimy and sticky. I’d seen these online before so I had an idea what they were worth. When I asked about the cost at the counter, they took a quick glance and named a price. It was more than I would usually pay, but much less than the going rate. I decided to get them.

The thrill of the hunt is fun, the cleaning is not. I’ve been using horrible posture bending over my kitchen sink all afternoon and my hands look like prunes, but it was worth it.

In this picture, I’ve cleaned the blue bowl and half of the red one.

I am now the proud owner of a cheery set of four primary color Pyrex mixing bowls and this lovely turquoise Butterprint Pyrex casserole dish. I never thought I would be able to find a turquoise piece in my price range so it is definitely my favorite. I have yet to find homes for them in my kitchen, but they will be displayed proudly.

I’ll throw in a few pictures of the Pyrex and milk glass I’ve already collected at yard sales or as gifts from friends and family. By the way, the quote at the beginning is from a very sweet book I started reading last night called Mrs. Miniver.
