Making a Fall Jumper from a 1970s Pattern

Happy fall! Autumn calls for warm colors and layers and maybe a little bit of whimsy. I got this checked woven fabric at a yard sale last year and had to find a pattern that suited it. The colors were perfect for fall, so I decided a versatile garment for fall weather would be best. The tones of the colors suggested the fabric was made in the 70s. I decided on a 70s style jumper that could be layered with short or long sleeves and tights or leggings as needed. The pattern is Simplicity 5146.

Trying to match up the check at seams took a little more time, but I liked being able to play with the direction of the fabric for the bib at the front and on the pocket to add interesting contrast. I also enjoyed finding some bright buttons and adding topstitching for a more professional look.

Fall usually means more time for me to work on creative projects so you may be seeing more sewing projects in the coming months! On the other hand, for those of you who thought you’d already seen this dress before, yes, I made it last year, but didn’t photograph it until the spring and then waited until fall again to share it, so maybe I shouldn’t promise anything. =)
