Backyard Beauty: Flower Arranging

LV
by Emily Dickinson

I send two sunsets-
Day and I in competition ran,
I finished two, and several stars,
While He was making one.

His own is ampler-
But, as I was saying to a friend,
Mine is the more convenient
To carry in the hand.

(sent with brilliant flowers)

I’m taking a little break from sharing pictures and stories of my travels to share some of the late summer beauty from my own garden! I recently checked out a library book on flower arrangements, (House of Flowers) mostly to look at the pretty pictures. However, I ended up reading the tips and instructions and was inspired to try out some of her advice.

Though it’s late summer and the zinnias are almost the only thing blooming in my garden (except my sunflower!), I wanted to try to be a little more creative in my arrangements, using herbs, less conspicuous blooms, interesting foliage, and even native “weeds”.

A few take-aways from the book.

  • Use a wide variety of types of flowers and foliage in an arrangement.
  • Make the arrangement twice as large as the vase or base holding the arrangement for visual balance.
  • Be vigilant about stripping all leaves from the stems which will be below the water line to make the blooms last longer (by avoiding bacteria).

I love how these two arrangements turned out and am thankful for beauty right outside my window!
