A few weeks ago, we got a dusting of snow that was gone well before noon. I was hoping it would be just the first hint of snow to come, but now I’m wondering if that might have been our one sight of snow this year.
When I took down my Christmas decorations, I pulled out a crisp blue and white tablecloth and displayed my recently acquired vintage blue and white Pyrex mixing bowls in the kitchen. I wanted a wintry garland to go along the bay of windows in the hall. I already have tacks up for garlands to match various seasons and holidays. I decided to make a garland that looked like it was made of snowflakes.

I had some packs of white crochet doilies and small crocheted flowers. I chose the crispest, whitest ones to go along with the “snow” theme. If you recreate this, you could probably use ones that were more aged, even with some spots or stains, if you go for a more rustic or “primitive” look.

I used white double fold seam binding as the base of the garland. I measured the space between the “snowflakes” so they were distributed evenly, adding a smaller crocheted flower in between the larger doilies for contrast. I sewed the folded seam binding closed, catching the doilies in as I went. You might be able to cut your doilies in half for a slightly different look or to make them stretch farther. I initially planned to do this, but realized the my doilies had an uneven number of points, which I though would look uneven if they were cut in half. Mine were already stiff, but you could starch them if needed.

Sorry for the bad lighting in the pictures. It is so hard to capture something that is so close to a window! I’m realizing white on white is also tricky to see in pictures though it looks beautiful in person. I’m happy with the results. Here’s hoping for a snow day!
Chelsea,
I love the snowflake garland. I think that is the only “snow” we are going to have.
